Fortnite: I’ve Been Living Under a Rock. What Is It? And What’s All The Hype About?
In today’s blog post we’re going to introduce our readers who know nothing about what Fortnight is, by trying to explain what the phenomenon is all about. However, before we jump into the exploration, take a moment and watch one of the most recent trailers for the video game below.
Fortnite: Changing The World Since 2017!
Fortnight seems to have taken over. Its become a massive sensation in the online gaming world and now we’re seeing that success start to spill over into the real world as well.
I was in a cafe recently and noticed some of the mugs they were serving lattes in had Fortnite characters on them. Then recently Drake, one of the word’s most popular rappers, made headline news when he joined Ninja for some Fortnite gameplay on the popular game streaming platform Twitch.
If you don’t know what Fortnite is, you might also not know who Ninja is. So who is Ninja you ask? Just a gamer who makes over $500,000 / month streaming and playing Fortnite online for other people to watch.
But the spill over doesn’t stop there with only coffee mugs and rappers. With Halloween approaching, don’t expect to leave your house and see the usual generic palette of goblins, ghosts and witches this year. Companies are popping up selling Fortnight costumes to game players. With so many Fortnite players all over the world, this Halloween don’t be surprised when you walk out your front door onto your street and feel like you’ve entered into a real living and breathing Fortnite game world. Freaky… I know.
Fortnite is surrounding us. Moving in on us like the gameworld does within the game.
You can’t turn anywhere without being bombarded with fortnight content. So what is the game all about?
Essentially, Fortnite is a first person shooter game (FPS) that was developed by Epic games in collaboration with People Can Fly in 2017.
The game takes place in a sort of post apocalyptic land where your character is one of the world’s last survivors and must engage in combat and build forts (and destroy other people’s forts) in order to stay alive.
You will be forced to fight against other online players and zombies (called Husks) in the game in order to win.
Surprising however, is the the game’s choice of style. The gameplay is somewhat comical and tends to edge towards ridiculous at points. This is part of the reason for the game’s huge popularity. It’s very different from most other post apocalyptic zombie games. It genre bends a little bit and slants a little to the left, and this helps give players something fresh and new to experience. Players seem to enjoy engaging with the game and it’s quirky features. You can even buy your character things like dance moves, many of which are inspired by popular dance memes online.
The gameplay, the visuals and the narrative keep game players coming back for me. Currently there are over 45 million active Fortnite players online, which is HUGE.
It will be interesting to watch where this franchise goes in the future. Stay tuned for more updates.
